Just over a year ago, I began an experiment using myself as a test subject. I took a deep dive into the world of gaming. I chose to immerse myself in a gaming ecosystem — MLB 9 Innings. I chronicled the beginning of my journey here.

I’ve had ups and downs and fun. But most importantly I focused on my actions and attitudes to learn more about myself.

Here are three ways gaming has hurt my mental health:

Mental Health Downer #1 —Real World Disruption

This is simply a scheduling and time point. I’ve wanted to participate in the various methods of game play.

This has sometimes hurt my focus at work and acted as a distraction to my family life. It’s important that anyone involved in gaming keeps their discipline and balances their hobby with the real-life activities that come first.

Mental Health Downer #2-Frustration/Failure

I’ve been determined to build a top level team. Instead of being super-elite I’ve learned this is hard and my team ranks around the top 5,600 teams. Not bad, but as a competitor who can become obsessed with winning, this has lead to disappointment as well.
