Background
During the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, Cambridge Analytica, which is no longer in operation, obtained access to the personal data of millions of Facebook accounts without users’ consent. The data was obtained through an app deployed on Facebook by a researcher.
The purpose of the data collection was voter profiling and targeting for Donald Trump’s campaign. This resulted in a scandal, which led to government investigations, lawsuits, and a high-profile congressional hearing where Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, was questioned.
